Wolletzsee circular (10 miles)
This circuit combines woodland, meadow and shoreline walking as we follow the outline of the Wolletzsee. A good place to begin is the village of Wolletz. The Biberbus from Angermünde passes through here during the warmer months and a sample Fahrplan can be found here. A PDF map of the wider area covered by the Biberbus with suggested outings is available to download here.
From the middle of Wolletz, head along Zur Kastanienallee, keeping the lake on your left. A minor track does lead down to a picnic spot by the water but this is also a dead end. Instead, follow the road and ignore routes off to the right. Basically use common sense to keep to edge of the See.
We enter woodland on an old concrete road and pass the much smaller Heiliger See which is a lovely rest stop. Before reaching the village of Altkündendorf, we need to take a signed grassy track to the left. This winds through a beautiful stretch of meadow which is buzzing with insects and butterflies during the summer. Alternatively you could visit Altkündendorf as it's barely half a mile distant and home to the Grumsiner Brennerei.
We enter the woods again. Follow the handy green marker spots (often painted on trees) to keep you right. As we approach the far corner of the lake, we hit the water's edge and pass a viewing platform at a natural spring known as the Adlerquelle. Skirt the Campingplatz in the clearing then go back into the trees. We have to take a short detour inland to find the bridge over the Weise River that empties into the lake. Double back and resume the trek along the Wolletzsee shore. Eventually we arrive at the Fachklinik - an old Schloss now serving as a recuperative centre - whose grounds extend down to the lake. The clinic has an excellent cafe with a terrace overlooking the water. Feel free to visit. It is just a short walk back to Wolletz itself.
