Taynish Nature Reserve (5 miles)
The reserve is situated on the Taynish Peninsula just south of the village of Tayvallich, bounded by Loch Sween and Linne Mhuirich. Three quarters of the territory is covered in ancient woodland and the influence of the Gulf Stream has led to the area being dubbed the Scottish rainforest. The mild climate allows an abundance of mosses and lichens to thrive. The official website is here.
The information board in the car park shows the layout of the trails. It is highly recommended that you include the summit of Bar Morr (412 feet) as this affords amazing views across to the Isle of Jura. The yellow path takes in the ancient woodland and you should do at least part of this. A good choice is to walk most of this loop and branch on to the red Bar Morr circuit. A document containing a map of the reserve and extensive background information can be found here.
Refreshments are available back in Tayvallich at the coffee shop.
