The waterfront at South Queensferry is always bustling and a fantastic view of the iconic Forth Bridge can be enjoyed. If arriving by train, alight at Dalmeny and make your way down to the shore. Pass under the giant steel structure and marvel at the engineering. Trains frequently rumble by overhead.
Follow the obvious path and note the small island of Inchgarvie directly under the bridge with its war defences still intact. Continue along the shoreline and drop down to the beach when you get a chance. Once on the sand, make your way to the headland in the distance.
Once at the corner of Peatdraught Bay, it is possible to climb up the dunes and obtain a sweeping view towards Edinburgh and Leith Docks. The heavily fortified island of Inchmickery is visible as is the tidal Cramond Island around to your right.
Make your way back by the same route and drop into the Hawes Inn which is full of nooks and crannies and has an extensive menu and well-kept ale. Just along the road is the Railbridge Bistro where a model train runs around the premises on a track suspended from the ceiling. Good food and an ale on offer too!
