Saline Glen (2 miles)
This walk explores an area of woodland reckoned to date from the Ice Age. The entrance to the glen is roughly opposite the village shop and a handy map is shown on an information board. The path follows the course of the burn upstream and is well defined. It can be muddy at times and stout walking boots are strongly recommended. We then gain some height and reach a point where a house backs on to the glen. The route soon drops sharply and rises steeply again. You may wish to turn back here if you don't feel confident about tackling this section.
Otherwise plough on and there's no shame in dropping to your hunkers! Once past the gully it's relatively straightforward going again. Saline Hill looks down upon the glen and a becomes visible as the trees thin out. We soon reach the ex-mining village of Steelend. As the path begins to peter out we cross a grassy playpark and join the main road. From here it's a downhill stroll on the pavement back to Saline, or you could choose to return through the glen. This walk could be easily be combined with the Bandrum Loop.
