Port Dundas Branch (3.7 miles)
Although the Forth & Clyde Canal provided an inland coast-to-coast route, the backers also decided to build a branch to serve the centre of Glasgow. This left the main waterway at Stockingfield Junction which lies less than a mile from the Kelvin Aqueduct where we turned off the towpath on our last stage.
Take a train out to Maryhill Station and walk a quarter mile down Maryhill road to reach the extensive system of locks. It's up to you whether you backtrack to fill in the short section back to the aqueduct.
Follow the path to the obvious canal junction and take the right-hand branch. We pass directly behind Firhill Stadium, home of Partick Thistle FC. Eventually we arrive at the wharf and it's surprising how close to the M8 we are. Pass under the motorway and it's an easy walk to the city centre.
PUB STOPS - The Pot Still on Hope Street is Glasgow's premier whisky bar, with hundreds of malts on offer. Cask ale drinkers are not forgotten and three handpulls are in operation, often dispensing Scottish brews.
