Linlithgow Loch (2 miles)
The historic town of Linlithgow is centred around the palace where Mary Queen of Scots was born. The loch sits behind the imposing building and can be easily accessed from the High Street. The circular route is simple to follow and almost entirely flat.
A wide variety of birds can be seen on the loch at all times of year. Look out for cormorants (pictured above) and goldeneye among the ubiquitous coot and mallards. Fine views of the palace can be had from many points on the circuit.
There is an ample selection of eating and drinking places on Linlithgow's main drag as well as a good choice of independent shops. Cask ale is served at Four Marys, Linlithgow Tap and Platform 3. The town is served frequently by trains from Edinburgh and Glasgow.
