Moor Loch circuit (3.5 miles)

Devilla Forest is a large plantation in West Fife covering some 2000 acres. There are many interlinking access roads, constructed paths and informal tracks therefore any number of permutations can be formed. Most people approach the woodland from the large car park off the A985 but for this trek we shall enter at the Kincardine end.

More information about Devilla can be found in this PDF.

A free public car park is situated on Kirk Street next to Tulliallan Primary School. Head uphill and keep going straight on after passing a church. We swing right at another church and enter the grounds of the Scottish Police College. This is a core path but the authorities do have the right to challenge you. Turn right and stick to the access road, passing the police memorial.

Head into Tulliallan Wood at the green Forestry Commission sign. Bear left at the first junction and keep to this main path, ignoring a couple of routes going off to the side. We are making a clockwise circuit of Moor Loch and it soon comes into view. The volume of water varies during the year.

We reach the northern side of the loch and a gap in the reeds has a bench which provides a nice place to take a break. Resume the trek on the Forestry Commission road and pass below the power lines. We drift away from the water and a right turn at the next crossroads brings us down to the southern tip. If you fancy getting closer to the edge, look out for a fingerpost indicating "Curling pond and Danish Camp" pointing into the trees. The track is distinct enough to follow and after a few hundred yards a gap in the vegetation provides a nice view across to a small island. Pushing a little further up the shoreline leads into a lovely rhododendron tunnel.

Retrace your steps back to the main path and turn right at the crossroads, passing a dwelling house. Bear left at the next split to return to the entrance to the police college where we began the woodland trail.
