Monifieth to Carnoustie (5 miles)
Although Angus doesn't have a formalised coastal path like Fife, there are many stretches of fine seaside walking in this county. From Monifieth railway station, pass under a very low bridge and alongside a caravan park to hit the waterfront. The Bay Diner offers a fantastic fry-up! Great views of the Firth of Tay can be enjoyed. Turn left along the shoreline and head back inland when another campsite is reached. Most of this walk actually takes place away from the coastline due to the presence of the Barry Buddon military training camp which has firing ranges out on the beach. We take a cycle path which hugs the railway and passes behind the army complex. As the signs cheerfully point out - do not touch anything, it may explode and kill you!
It's basically a case of following the path all the way to Carnoustie alongside the railway. We actually pass a couple of intermediate stations. Barry Links was built to serve the training camp but only a couple of trains per day stop nowadays. Climbing the footbridge reveals a lengthy dead-straight section of track - fairly unusual in the UK. A substantial abandoned platform can be spotted in the undergrowth next to the path so obviously the station was a busier concern at one time.
Golf Street station is situated on the edge of Carnoustie and also receives just a token service. The tiny wooden platforms are not employed when a major tournament hits the town. Push on to the centre of Carnoustie past the golfing links. Trains back to Monifieth run roughly every hour.
