Kinpurney Hill (3.5 miles)

This walk takes us up Kinpurney Hill which stands 1130 feet high and overlooks the village of Newtyle. The trek is decribed as a stand-alone expedition but it could easily be combined with the excellent network of walking paths which weave their way around Newtyle. A low-level circuit is featured here.

Newtyle lies 10 miles to the north of Dundee and the village shop sells a pack containing several booklets giving comprehensive details of the various walking routes interspersed with the history of the area, including the hill climb. A recommended purchase. Start at the public park on North Street. There are toilets and parking available here. Follow the road away from the village for 1000 yards until you reach Denend Farm. A signposted track leads to the right and this takes you up through a leafy den. Make sure you keep the stone barn on your right as you pass through the farmyard.

The path follows the Edderty Burn upstream. Steps and walkways have been constructed. Emerge from the den by passing through a gate and follow the purple waymarkers up the hillside. A tower stands on the summit making our destination obvious. It formerly served as an observatory and was restored in the 1970s.

A handy viewfinder at the top allows you to pinpoint the surrounding peaks. Excellent views can be had of Angus and neighbouring Perthshire. Make your way back to Newtyle by the same route.
