Glen Ogle Trail (5 miles)
This walk begins in the village of Lochearnhead which is centred around the junction of the A84 with the A85. Car parking and public toilets are available on the latter. Proceed northwards up the A85 in the Crianlarich direction. After 200 yards we pass a set of railbridge abutments and we take the narrow road to the left which bends back on itself. This is signposted Lochearnhead Scout Station and - as the name suggests - is the village's former railway station now functioning as a scouting activity centre. The platforms and buildings are beautifully preserved.
Look for a track leading up the slope to the right, signed Glen Ogle Trail. It's a steep climb up to the old railway trackbed but we are rewarded with increasingly nice views as height is gained. Once on the line, turn right and follow the well-surfaced path which now accommodates walkers and cyclists as part of the Rob Roy Way. The viaduct on the old line to Comrie can be seen far below.
Simply follow the trackbed towards the viaduct. The gradient is slightly uphill. The curved profile of the viaduct - which extends for 150 yards - allows you to view much of the structure from the edge of the path as you approach the parapet. We are nestled in the greenery of Glen Ogle and it is a very pleasant setting. Return to Lochearnhead by the reverse route.
If driving back towards Callander on the A84, pull in at the Scottish Real Ale Shop on the outskirts of town at the junction with the A821. If nobody is in attendance, ring the bell and and assistance will arrive from the adjacent Lade Inn. The shop stocks over 200 ales from all corners of Scotland.
