Glasgow Cathedral (2 miles)
This city wander takes us east of the centre and encompasses a number of historical sites and buildings. Start at George Square which is very close to the bus and rail stations. Proceed along George Street and turn left up Montrose Street. Work your way diagonally through Rottenrow Gardens which occupy the site of the former maternity hospital which was demolished at the turn of the century. A safety pin sculpture stands in commemoration and we leave the gardens through the original hospital stone arch.
Keep walking in a straight line. Pass through the University of Strathclyde campus which features a sculpture garden. Continue along Rottenrow East and then take a left on to Collins Street. Look for a path on your right just after a car park which brings you to the Provand's Lordship House. This is the oldest building in Glasgow and it is now a museum. Entry is free and it's worth having a nose around.
Across the road is the St Mungo Museum of Religious Art which again offers free entry. Walk towards the imposing Glasgow Cathedral which is open to visitors. Follow the green signs to Glasgow Necropolis which sits on a low hill. Walking up to the summit provides fine views of the cathedral and the city skyline. You can also see the massive Tennent's Brewery which pumps out the industrial fizz which Scotland seems to thrive on. Jeder sein Geschmack as the Germans would say! There are plenty of impressive tombs to explore.
Retrace your steps to the start or head down the High Street to hook up with George Street. Once back on George Square, visit the Counting House on the corner of St Vincent's Place. This cavernous pub occupies a former bank and serves a huge selection of ales.
