Dunbar to East Linton (7.5 miles)
The John Muir Way runs 134 miles from coast to coast across central Scotland. It is waymarked throughout. Start in Dunbar High Street where the John Muir Birthplace Museum explains what the man achieved in his life. We head over to the harbour area which has some rugged rock formations and work our way along the cliff and past a golf course towards Belhaven Bay which has a "bridge to nowhere" out on the sands. We then take an inland turn through the John Muir Country Park.
The Tyne estuary is a beautiful stretch of this path. Note the curious concrete blocks lining the shore, most probably installed as anti-tank barriers during the war. We then diverge from the river along a farm track before a short section of main road walking which hooks us back up with the Tyne.
We follow the course of the river towards the town of East Linton. On the way we pass by Preston Mill which was used commercially until 1959. It is now owned by the National Trust and has been used as a filming location in the internationally successful TV series Outlander. The conically-shaped building is a must see.
We finish this section in East Linton where the Crown & Kitchen serves real ale. There are regular buses back to Dunbar but bear in mind that some operators in the Lothians operate an exact-fare policy.
