Southerness Stroll (1 mile)
The holiday village of Southerness is situated on the shores of the Solway Firth. Find a parking spot beyond the huge caravan park and make your way towards the imposing landmark of the lighthouse. It was erected in 1748 and stands remarkably close to the beach. When the tide is ebbing, you can easily walk out to the structure.
Turn right along the sand which also contains pebbles. Views of the estuary open up and there is a variety of birdlife to observe. It's possible to walk around half a mile and the adjacent golf course is above your head. The direct route back to the lighthouse gets cut off by the incoming tide but a stone staircase at the edge of the village allows you to return via the residential streets. Of course you must come this way on the outward leg if the tide happens to be fully in when you arrive. Toilet facilities are available in Southerness and there is also a convenience store and a pub/restaurant.
