Berlin Museum Island (2 miles)

Trains from Schönefeld Airport stop at Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse and it's an easy walk from here to the famed Museumsinsel (Museum Island). Five museums dedicated mainly to archaeology, sculpture and art occupy the island sandwiched between the River Spree and the Spree Canal. At the time of writing, a combined ticket for all five venues costs €18. The Pergamon is the best known of the bunch and is Berlin's most visited museum. From the station, follow Dorotheenstrasse until you meet the water.

Turn left along the Spree canal - passing the Pergamon entrance - until you see Bode Museum on the tip of the island. A footbridge crosses both the artificial waterway and the river itself bringing you to the other side. Now take a right and proceed along the opposite bank. The prominent cathedral over on the island is the Berliner Dom. Not on Museumsinsel is the DDR Museum which you will soon encounter. It offers a glimpse into life in the former communist state. Included of course are the Trabant car and the Schwalbe motorcycle (pictured). Cross over to the island and make your way along Am Lustgarten for a close-up view of the cathedral entrance. Wander through the garden towards the Altes Museum and take the bridge back over the canal. We have almost completed a loop around the island. Simply look for Dorotheenstrasse to take you back towards the railway station.
