Sheriffmuir Forest (2 miles)

The inconclusive Battle of Sheriffmuir took place in 1715 during the first Jacobite uprising. A tall monument to Clan MacRae stands on Sheriffmuir Road a couple of miles outside Dunblane. Parking is available here and an information board shows a colour-coded network of paths. Take the blue Mar Trail - in reference to the leader of the rebel force - that leads past the Gathering Stone. Encased by metal hoops since being smashed by English navvies following a dispute in 1848, the former standing stone marks the point where the Jacobite standard was allegedly erected.

The Mar Trail follows a roughly semi-circular course to hook up with the red Argyll Trail - named after the commander of the government troops. Turn left to return to the monument. You could also create a variation of this walk by starting in Dunblane town.
