Path of Condie (4.2 miles)

A few miles north of Kinross and Milnathort, you enter a remote part of South Perthshire where a patchwork of minor roads runs through the the hills. Path of Condie is a tiny hamlet by the Water of May and Chapel Burn. A signed walk takes you through the valley and along higher-level paths which offer wide views. Parking is very limited in this area but a lay-by at the entrance to Clow Wood on the unclassified road to Dunning offers a few spaces. Hike up the forestry road and follow the wooden signposts for Path of Condie at the junction.

We skirt around Clow Hill which has recently been shorn of its tree cover. It's worth picking your way partially up the slope to stand on a stump and take in the impressive views. The twin Lomond Hills are prominent on the horizon. The marked way then descends into the lush green May Valley where we encounter an abandoned farmstead. Cross the stream on a concrete bridge near two caravans and gain height on the opposite side before hopping over the style which gives access to sheep fields. A roughly straight course brings you to the Path of Condie settlement and we now have to use the roads to return to the starting point. Turn left downhill to the junction where both rivers flow under the road. Then left again (signed Dunning) and up around a fearsome hairpin bend before the road splits. Take the left fork to reach the original lay-by.
