Aberdour Harbour (2 miles)
The coastal town of Aberdour is a very popular destination for locals during a sunny spell. The railway station is just off the High Street and has won numerous awards over the years for its well-kept gardens. There is also a large car park here. Aberdour Castle is adjacent to the station and is a very pleasant place to stroll around on a warm day. To reach the harbour, proceed along High Street for a short distance and head down Shore Road.
There are beautiful views across to Edinburgh and an information board helps you pinpoint the landmarks as well as the islands in the Firth of Forth. Turn left to follow the obvious path past the harbour and boatyard. We are making use of the Fife Coastal Path and this must surely rank as one of the most elegant stages. We cross the Dour Burn before arriving at a junction with a steep flight of steps. It's best to stay on the lower level and work your way around the headland, taking in the sweeping panorama.
Do climb the next stairway, the elevation allowing to to see up and down the firth. Descend the long shallow staircase towards the beacon where an information board tells you about naval defence activities in the area. Take the narrow road which leads towards Silver Sands beach, one of the most popular sunbathing spots in Fife. A cafe is open during the summer months.
Walk uphill to the car park and go past the pay booth. You should see a path descending to your left which brings us back to sea level near the boatyard. You can now retrace your steps to the High Street. McTaggart's is an excellent place to eat and the Foresters Arms is a well-known real-ale outlet. The Aberdour Hotel across the road also has a couple of handpumps in the public bar.
