Start in Town Park, near the central shopping centre. Walk towards the River Leven and cross the footbridge, following markers for the Fife Pilgrim Way. Stay on this trail until you pass through a subway and climb a flight of steps. At the junction with Pitcoudie Avenue, turn left along a footpath and maintain a straight course to the slender concrete bridge over a main road. On the other side you will see the remains of Pitcairn House, the oldest stone building in Glenrothes. Stay on the path, crossing over Claymore court. Hang right at Brae Court, taking Tern Path between the housing and the woodland interior. Ignore side junctions. Eventually you emerge upon Pitcairn Avenue.
Turn right then head left at the roundabout, following the sign for Coul Den. Bear right at the first junction then go left up Calder Court. This street leads to the parking area for the nature reserve, where a map is on display. There is also a bench with a wonderful view over the pond. Take the gravel path that passes to the right of the water and keep going until you reach a junction at the Conland Burn. Turn left between the watercourse and the adjacent fields. After the second footbridge, proceed up the flight of stairs. Walk straight ahead along the path paralleling a fence. As the gradient begins to drop sharply, look for a side exit that takes you under the power lines to the right and skirts the lower slopes of the adjacent mound. If you miss this junction, meeting another footbridge will alert you to the fact you've gone slightly too far. Continue to a point where four tracks converge and glance right to see the stone circle. A grassy trail leads up to the site. The main path leads back down to the residential Pitcairn park, which joins Pitcairn Avenue. Here you can catch a bus to the town centre or walk back the way you came, which adds another mile and a half to the total.
