Rumbling Bridge (0.3 miles)

The A823 is one of the great unsung Scottish drives. Running 30 miles from Dunfermline to Crieff, a nice place to pause is at the tiny Kinross-Shire village of Rumbling Bridge. Parking for a few vehicles is available at the bridge itself. Walk through the gate at the southern end and follow the path high above the River Devon. This is signed for Crook of Devon and you will hear the water crashing below.

After 250 yards, cross the wooden bridge which offers great views of the rapids and explore the pathways on the opposite bank. A swirling cauldron of water is an impressive sight and you can also view the road bridge from below. You will see that the present structure has been built on top of a much lower bridge. This was done to alleviate the steep slope down to the original crossing.

You can simply make your way back to road level on the north side. Alternatively head further upstream for 300 yards until the trail meets a minor road. The water marks the boundary between the shires of Perth and Kinross. A third option is to follow the south bank from the crossing point to Crook of Devon. This walk is just over a mile each way and there is a pub and a shop in this village. Back at Rumbling Bridge, why not have a look at the remains of the old railway station? The last train called in 1964 but the platform is still clearly visible.
