Gaddon & Birnie (1.5 miles)
In the 1990s, a worked-out quarry sandwiched between the B937 and A91 was transformed into a nature reserve, centred around two man-made lochs. The reserve is situated next to Fife Zoo and the car park is accessed from the B937. A map shows the extent of the trails and the location of the bird hides. Take the clockwise route and follow the path through the woodland.
After completing three quarters of Birnie Loch, you have the option of cutting down the strip between the two bodies of water which leads directly back to the starting point. For the full mile and a half circuit, head towards Loch Gaddon and keep working your way round. Some height is gained, offering nice views of the Lomond Hills to the southwest and Collessie village to the north. Follow the trail around the water's edge back to the car park. Refreshments are available in Auchtermuchty, or pop down the B936 to the excellent Dunshalt Village Store. Looking for a veggie/vegan fix? The Pillars of Hercules outside Falkland on the A912 has an excellent cafe and attached shop.
