Dunfermline to Loch Fitty (4.5 miles)

Start in the ancient abbey churchyard and work your way along Maygate past the library and museum. Hike up Guildhall Street to join the High Street then turn right. Continue along East Port to the Carnegie Hall before crossing diagonally towards the car-park on Leys Park Road. Pick up the cycle track that runs behind the football stadium and keep going until you reach Queen Margaret station.

Proceed uphill past the hospital and switch to another cycle path at the rising T-junction. We now parallel the B912 to Kingseat village. Follow the pavement alongside the main road and ignore an offshoot to the right, signposted for Cowdenbeath. Instead keep a straight course for Kelty and walk beyond the village limits. A tarmac drive to your left leads to Hawthorn Acres and the fencepost marker indicates this is part of the Pilgrim Way. Continue downhill past the house and join the obvious path that leads to the shores of Loch Fitty. Bear right and cross the causeway. We pass a farmhouse and emerge at a horse riding centre where we meet the B912. The walking route continues towards the opencast site at St Ninians - marked by a conical artificial hill topped with land artwork. However this stage terminates at the roadside car-park and a bus stop on the other side has a regular service back to Dunfermline.
