Berwick Town Walls (1.3 miles)
Berwick is located on the English side of the border and was a strategic military stronghold for centuries. The town fortifications are still intact and form a historic circular trail. From the car-park at Quay Walls by the River Tweed, proceed upstream and view the Grade-1 listed old Berwick Bridge. The 15-span stone viaduct was completed in 1624 and now carries local road traffic in one direction only. Next up is the Royal Tweed Bridge, dating from 1928. It functioned as a major road artery until 1984, when the modern town bypass opened.
Continue along the river path towards the Victorian railway marvel that is the Royal Border Bridge. Bear right before reaching the grand crossing, following the signs for Town Walls. A steep climb reveals fantastic views of the river and surrounding landscape.
The walk now takes you along the top of the town defences and several interpretation boards explain Berwick's importance in a military sense. We look down upon a historic graveyard and then pass the old barracks that now house a museum and various community facilities. Sea views are available on this stretch and the lighthouse looms in the distance. Stick to the obvious path that loops around the Main Guard and returns you to the starting point. A superb town circuit packed with local heritage.
