The walk begins in Loanhead town centre. Pick up Polton Road just off the High Street then make a right-hand turn along Polton Vale. As the residential street curves to the right, carry straight on down the wide tree-lined track. Follow this avenue downhill to the end and jack-knife back on yourself at the path junction, walking away from the glistening steelwork of the mighty Bilson Glen viaduct. We continue our descent into the gorge and care should be taken on the steep path which can be muddy after a wet spell. Cross the stone bridge over the Bilston Burn and turn left at the T-junction after ascending the other side of the valley.
A good head for heights is needed on this path as it crosses a ridge with sheer drops on either side. There is however a good few feet of room and the walkway is level. We then make our way down via a couple of wooden staircases to meet Polton Road again. Turn right initially, then left at the war memorial to cross the Bilston Burn again. Take the route along the bank of the North Esk - signed Mavisbank House and Lasswade. A large walled garden appears in the adjacent grassy field but we can view it from above on the way back. Stick to the river path, which eventually bends away from the water and leads sharply up to Kevock Road. Turn left uphill. After 50 yards you will pass a large block-shaped white house standing just feet from the roadway.
Just beyond the garage for this property is the entrance to a public right of way. A metal gate is located in a clearing just off the start of a tarmac driveway (for the next house). Go through here and re-enter the estate. Keep to the high-level footpath then take a left at the next fork. Continue straight ahead, ignoring a path leading downwards. The abandoned Mavisbank House comes into view as you walk above the ornamental pond. The ruined mansion is now fenced off but excellent views can still be obtained of this once palatial dwelling. Head downhill, following the narrow road past the walled garden. Pause at the viewpoint. Cut across the expanse of grass to re-join the river path and complete your journey back to Loanhead.
