Dundee to Broughty Ferry (4 miles)
Broughty Ferry lies further up the coast from Dundee but - until recently - it was an untidy passage due to the necessity of walking alongside a busy road in order to bypass the city port. Thankfully the situation has been improved with the construction of a dedicated route for walkers and cyclists through the industrial area.
Make your way to the docklands, which are close to the bus station. It's worth having a look at HMS Unicorn, the oldest warship still afloat from the days of sail. It now functions as a museum. Follow the course of the railway line away from the city to take you in the direction of Broughty Ferry.
As you approach the security gates at the Dundee Port Authority, road markings guide you towards the footpath which runs alongside the perimeter fence. Eventually you emerge at a public road which gives way to a pleasant footpath along the coast. The distinctive landmark of Broughty Castle is prominent in the distance and trains run close by on the East Coast Main Line.
When you hit the town, continue along the waterfront until you reach Fort Street. Beer lovers should pop into The Fisherman's Tavern, a Good Beer Guide entry for countless years. Six ales are dispensed from an array of gleaming handpulls and a wide choice of pub grub is available. After a wander around, you can catch a train or bus back to Dundee if you don't fancy the walk in reverse. The railway station has a preserved signal box and is adjacent to a level crossing right in the middle of town.
