Museum and Law Hill (3.2 miles)
Dundee's state-of-the-art V&A museum opened its doors in 2018 and has been a key component of the waterfront regeneration project. Situated very close to the railway station and next to HMS Discovery (also well worth a visit), the V&A has free admission although special exhibitions carry a charge. The large permanent gallery contains a vast and diverse array of objects. A spacious café is situated on the ground floor.
After your fill of culture, how about scaling The Law - an extinct volcano which overlooks the city. The summit is 572 feet above where you are standing and the war memorial at the top is a prominent landmark. From the city centre, head along Reform Street then take a left on to Ward Road. Turn right at Constitution Road and keep going - a steep climb in itself!
After reaching the top of the "Conshy", turn left along Somerville Place. The Dundee Royal Infirmary was formerly situated here. Take a right up Law Street then head left along Albany Terrace. After 200 yards, look for a flight of steps to your right. These lead to the summit of The Law. The views from the top are spectacular; the entire city can be seen as well as the River Tay and the hills in the distance.
Make your way back to the city centre for a bite to eat. Jimmy Chung's Chinese buffet on Whitehall Street will replenish those lost calories! Dundee seems to have a thing for converting old banks into pubs. The Bank Bar on Union Street has a traditional feel and serves three cask ales. The more spacious Counting House on Reform Street is a Wetherspoons outlet with a wide choice of beer. Round the corner from the Counting House are the excellent McManus Galleries, containing a local history museum and artwork. Highly recommended. Admission is again free.
