Dundee to Invergowrie (5 miles)
Start at Discovery Point on the waterfront. The V & A Museum is free to enter and displays various aspects of Scottish design. There is a charge to board RSS Discovery but a fantastic account of Captain Scott's polar adventures in the vessel is relayed. Proceed upstream along the walkway for pedestrians and cyclists. A series of information points provides historical information about the city and river. Pass beneath the Tay Bridge.
Upon reaching the students playing fields, turn right towards the main road then left along the pavement to parallel the river. Walk by Dundee Airport, noting the Dundee University botanical gardens atop a ridge across the road. We encounter Riverside Nature Reserve which occupies an old landfill site. Either stay on the pavement alongside the A85 or follow a course through the parkland to emerge several hundred yards further along. A signed path for Invergowrie branches off to the left. This joins Burnside Road. Head downhill towards the railway station. You can jump on a train back to the city or cross the footbridge and enter a patch of woodland via the platform gate. The path merges with a gravel road and runs close to the water to give lovely views across the estuary towards Fife. Hike up Errol Road at the railway bridge to reach the centre of Invergowrie. Regular buses run back to Dundee.
