Burntisland town (2.5 miles)

Start at the eastern end of the High Street (a large car-park is situated nearby, next to the links). Burntisland has somehow defied the prevailing retail decline of town centres nationwide and offers a surprising array of traditional shops. Maintain a straight course, passing below the railway. We now enter an industrial area and you can either take the raised walkway or stick to the road. The routes meet again at Half Moon House, which now hosts a dental practice. Go up the flight of steps and turn left at the top, making use of a footpath that runs alongside the residential gardens.

We eventually descend to meet an access road. Turn right, passing a playpark, then take a left on to a signed cycle route that skirts a small pond. A narrow pedestrian tunnel takes you beneath the railway line and emerges on to the official Fife Coastal Path. Turn right and follow the marker posts back to Kirkton Road. Head uphill and over the crest. Look for a long flight of stone steps to your left and proceed upwards. This walkway gives great views across the rooftops and out to sea. Descend on to Manse Lane then take a right down a staircase and along Rose Street to emerge back on the High Street where we began. Cross over and walk down Links Place past the excellent chip shop and over the railway line on Lammerlaws Road. Go past the swimming pool and curve round to meet a promenade that borders the beach. Walk as far as the railway underpass and stroll along the links back to the starting point.
