River Avon Ducts (4.2 miles)
The Union Canal crosses the River Avon on a high aqueduct which is 270 yards long. Parking is available just off the B825 where the road passes under the waterway. Proceed on to the towpath and keep the water on your right. After rounding a curve, you will see the aqueduct ahead. Enjoy the fine views over the balustrade. The Avon Viaduct can easily be picked out.
Upon reaching the other side, take the signed "Avon Heritage Trail" down a flight of steps. The official route branches immediately downstream but it's worth checking out the aqueduct from below by turning left. This path is unkempt but simple and safe to follow. Viewing the structure from the foot of the giant pillars gives you a much better idea of the engineering scale involved.
Make your way back to the staircase and follow the river, initially high above but soon descending to a lower level. The route is obvious and the imposing Avon Viaduct reveals itself. Spanning an incredible 23 arches, the structure carries trains running between Edinburgh and Glasgow so you're sure to spot a service as you approach the structure.
The river path ends at the viaduct and you can either retrace your steps or make your way back around Avon Lagoon for a change of scenery. This is a good place to spot goosander and tufted ducks. The lagoon path winds its way back to the river and we take the heritage trail back to the starting point. A nice place for a bite to eat is Bridge 49 bistro adjacent to the B825 bridge over the canal where we began.
