Aberdour Heughs (3 miles)

This loop provides some unexpected views looking down on Silversands Bay. From the railway station car park, follow the path alongside the castle. Climb the steps to Hawkcraig Road and take a left towards the main A921. You may also wish to stroll around the churchyard at St Fillans, which backs on to the castle gardens. Back at the main road, turn right in the direction of Burntisland. As you reach the town boundary sign at the bottom of a steep rise, follow the core path on your right into the woods.

This area is known as The Heughs and height is steadily gained until you are walking along a ridge with the railway clattering away below. One or two clearings emerge, offering amazing views of the beach with Inchcolm Island beyond. A handy bench has been placed allowing you to appreciate the maritime vista. Note that care needs to be taken on certain sections, particularly the descent to the coast. However there are no serious dangers.

Work your way back along the signed Fife Coastal Path, passing below the East Coast Main Line and alongside the water. Stick to the railway when you reach a path junction and follow the trail which runs between the line and a stone wall. This brings you back to Hawkcraig Road where you began. Aberdour is a beautiful seaside town with several options for eating and drinking.
