Powmill Quarry (0.6 miles)
Officially known as Devonshaw Quarry, the abandoned site lies hidden behind trees just off the A977 trunk road. Thousands of vehicles must pass every day completely unaware of the place. West of Powmill village, there are two short lay-bys on the left, both of which accommodate just one vehicle. Huge boulders have been positioned to prevent people driving into the old quarry grounds. The area is used by divers and the small parking places may already be taken - particularly at weekends. Alternative options are to use the lengthier lay-bys around half a mile further on or park back in Powmill. Both scenarios involve walking alongside the main road to the quarry entrance points.
Once past the boulders, head up the dirt tracks which lead you to the water-filled quarry. These paths can be muddy so appropriate boots are recommended. The quarry is simple enough to find and the depth of the water is reportedly 12 metres. There are no sheer drops and it's safe enough to explore the site. You may spot old cars dumped at the bottom. One is easy enough to find but the rest may require certain light conditions to be visible. Sadly - and somewhat predictably - there are many discarded bottles and cans as well as other debris. An interesting wee wander if you happen to be passing through. The Powmill Milk Bar in the village serves refreshments.
