Black Devon Loop (3.5 miles)

Clackmannan has an impressive tolbooth at the end of Main Street. The Mannan Stone stands to the side. To view the tower, head up High Street (named after its elevation) and pass through a gate. The building dates from the 14th century and stands atop a small hill. There are only a handful of selected opening days during the year. It is possible to descend the slope on the other side to connect with our river trail but this way can be slippery and livestock often graze behind the tower. It's best to walk back to the tolbooth.

Descend Kirk Wynd and take the signed path to the left once you pass the blocks of flats. This leads into Back Wood and towards the Black Devon river. Ignore the first path your right as the main route has the best surface and we'll be at the water soon enough. Do turn right at the next junction and follow the Black Devon downstream. Cross the bridge and continue along the opposite bank. Eventually we emerge on open land and the route to the nature reserve is clearly indicated.

Use the boardwalk to reach the viewing screen which overlooks a pond. Seating is provided and the area provides a home for various birds and insects. Make your way back to Clackmannan by crossing the river and walking towards the tower via the field path. We skirt the bottom of the hill and link up with the Back Wood route where we started.
