Johnstone to Kilmacolm (7.8 miles)
From Johnstone railway station, proceed along the High Street and take a right turn on to the old trackbed at the car-park for Morrisons supermarket. The path has a good tarmac surface and is well signposted as a cycle route along the entire length. Bear left at the first junction and take the footbridge over the A737. This intersection is where two railways diverged and we head towards Bridge of Weir, which is reached after three miles and offers refreshment options.
Cross the impressive skew-arched viaduct (although you won't see the stonework while on top) and continue in the direction of Kilmacolm. A signed detour provides an opportunity to visit the historic Quarrier's Village - constructed in the late 19th century as a home for orphaned children. Now a commuter base, the village retains much of the original architecture and lies three quarters of a mile away from the railway path. The final part of the trackbed takes us into the centre of Kilmacolm which has a good selection of shops. The route continues to Greenock but our trek ends here for today. McGill's Buses provide direct connections (Mon-Sat) back to Johnstone. On Sundays, a change at Bridge of Weir is required.
