Kelvingrove Museum (4 miles)
The streets in Glasgow city centre are arranged in a grid pattern which can make for easier navigation. It can often be a case of take this street and keep going. This strategy forms the basis of our walk. Start on George Square, easily accessible from the bus and rail stations. From the bottom corner, head along St Vincent Place which quickly becomes St Vincent Street. And keep going! Over the M8 which scythes through the heart of Glasgow and then branch on to Argyle Street. Once again, just follow and we arrive at Kelvingrove Museum.
Entry is free and the entrance hall is breathtaking. A vastly diverse collection is spread across 22 galleries and there is something for everyone. Spend at least a couple of hours to take it all in. Exit at the other end and make your way through the grounds to Sauchiehall Street. Stroll along this thoroughfare all the way back to the city centre. A suggested detour is to turn left up Woodside Crescent upon reaching the motorway crossing and take the curving footbridge across to Buccleuch Street. Walk uphill to the Tenement House. Owned by the National Trust, the residence has an interior that has barely changed since the 1920s. A superb insight into a different age.
Rejoin Sauchiehall Street which brings you back into the middle of the city. There are a few noteworthy alehouses along the way. The State Bar is on the corner of Holland Street and has a traditional wooden interior. The modern Hengler's Circus is across the road. Back at the M8 crossing, The Bon Accord is a short walk from the Mitchell Library. A huge range of whiskies are available plus 10 ales on tap. Another haven for whisky fans is the Pot Still on Hope Street which has hundreds of malts for sale. Real ale fans are not forgotten and two or three Scottish brews are available.
