Balloch to Dumbarton (8 miles)
Balloch lies at the foot of Loch Lomond and is a popular spot for boat cruises. A railway from Glasgow terminates in the town centre and day trippers arrive in droves. Our walk follows the River Leven which flows out of the loch and down to the Firth of Clyde just five miles distant. The path sticks close to the water's edge although a couple of meanders are chopped out. Start in the middle of Balloch where the river flows below the main road.
After a mile and a half we have the option of making a short detour into Alexandria. The town has an ornate Victorian fountain which is sadly dry. Back on the river path, we pass a football ground which has historical significance. Millburn Park is home to Vale of Leven FC, now operating in the junior ranks but an early giant of the game, winning the Scottish Cup three times in succession back in the 1870s. The ground dates from 1888 when Vale were still one of the top clubs in the land. After passing under the A82, the route winds through marshland with the town of Dumbarton appearing on the horizon.
The trail finishes at Bridge Street which crosses the Leven. Proceed along the High Street where many eating and drinking options are available. The distance covered to this point is five and a half miles. It's well worth walking out to Dumbarton Castle which is built into a large volcanic rock on the north bank of the Clyde. Follow the signs and make your way up the rock which offers superb views from the summit. The home stadium of Dumbarton FC lies directly below. The castle at one time was one of the most strategic defence positions in Scotland. Make your way back to the town centre and locate Dumbarton Central Station to catch a train back to Balloch.
