Perth River Trail (2.75 miles)

Start at the South Inch car-park and make your way towards the river. The Fergusson Art Gallery stands on the corner of Tay Street and Marshall Place. It houses the largest collection of paintings by popular Scottish Colourist John Duncan Fergusson. Admission is free. Proceed upstream, noting the information panels that form part of the Perth Medieval Trail. Pass under the arches of Perth Bridge - dating from 1771 - and continue into North Inch park. Follow the tarred path past the playing fields and towards the golf course until a sign for the Black Watch Museum instructs you to swing left.

We start doubling back on the opposite edge of the Inch and the Black Watch Museum is well worth checking out if you have an interest in military history. Admission is £9 at the time of writing.  It occupies Balhousie Castle and there is also a café just inside the main entrance. Merge on to Rose Terrace with its grand houses, cross over busy Atholl Street at the lights and wander down Kinnoull Street. Take a left on to Mill Street and view the modern Concert Hall beside the 19th-century City Museum (free entry). The narrow lane Skinnergate brings you to the High Street. Skip over and pick up St John Street which leads past the iconic kirk that has dominated the centre of Perth for over 500 years. Next to St John's is the City Hall which is currently undergoing renovation and slated to become a museum. A stroll down Princes Street leads back to the starting point.
