Devilla Keir Dam (1.4 miles)
The only waymarked trail in Devilla is the loop around Bordie Loch. It is possible to diverge from this route and walk up to the peaceful Keir Dam where swans can usually be spotted. A minor track takes us directly there and makes a pleasant change from following Forestry Commission roads. Plus there's a good chance of finding a few mushrooms along the way. For more information about Devilla, refer to this PDF file.
From the large car park just off the A985, proceed on to the signed Red Squirrel Trail. Look out for a straight narrow path leading off to the right before you reach the junction for the loop around Bordie Loch (see map below). Follow this track (which has been upgraded to a gravel surface) and keep your eyes peeled for fungi. Sickeners and fly agaric abound but they aren't for human consumption. The real prize is the cep, shown in the picture above.
Upon intersecting with an access road, head right for 25 yards then turn left on to a pleasant trail through the woods. This leads to the western edge of Keir Dam. Alternatively, head straight across at the end of the gravel path and take the narrow informal track through the trees. This turns abruptly right upon reaching a stream and also leads to Keir Dam. There are a couple of options for returning to the car park. Either retrace your steps - perhaps doing the short circuit around Bordie Loch - or head left along the Forestry Commission road, branching right at a junction to reach the car park.
