Dunning Witch Trail (1.6 miles)

The quiet village of Dunning is situated in South Perthshire at a confluence of minor roads. The settlement is clustered around St Serf's Church, home of the Dupplin Cross - a 9th century Pictish carving. Admission is free during the summer months. Have a stroll around, perhaps dropping into the Kirkstyle Inn where real ale is available.

Just under a mile outside the village - along the B8062 - is the mysterious Maggie Wall Monument. The inscription informs us that Maggie was burned here as a witch in 1657. Nobody is really sure of the exact details but this is the only such memorial in Scotland dedicated to an individual woman. Various items have been left upon the stonework, including coins, trinkets and candles. Whoever Maggie Wall was, a steady stream of people still come to pay tribute to her today.
