Fiddler's Path (5.5 miles)
Start at Dunkeld Cathedral and have a look around this magnificent building. There is a permanent exhibition within, telling the story of the town and the church itself. Fiddler's Path passes by the cathedral and and it is a signed route. Soon we hit the banks of the Tay and follow the river upstream. We pass the grand Dunkeld House Hotel.
We steadily gain height until we are a fair distance above the river. The path then passes below the busy A9. After 200 yards we join a footpath alongside the highway which takes us back over the bridge before we thankfully disappear among the trees on the other side. We duck under the railway and the A9 (again) before reaching the opposite riverbank where we head back downstream.
Neil Gow's Oak greets us, the old tree named after a local fiddler who lends his name to our route. Further on, the way is interrupted by the River Braan which is crossed by a footbridge. Yet another dive under the A9 is required. From here it is a straightforward walk back to Dunkeld town centre which offers plenty facilities. The Country Bakery is an excellent place for a snack, while the Royal Dunkeld Hotel offers local cask ales.
