Kingsbarns to St Andrews (8 miles)

This section of the coastal path is probably the most difficult in terms of uphill (and corresponding downhill) stretches. Some minor scrambling over large rocks on the beach is also required. A few areas may not be passable at high tide. Please check times before you set out. We begin on the beach at Kingsbarns which is a good half mile from the centre of the village.

The first couple of miles hug the shore but an inland detour is necessary as we approach Boarhills. Then it's back to the coast for some interesting rock formations (Buddo Rock pictured below) and - wait for it - another golf course! There is a considerable amount of up-and-down hiking as we work our way towards St Andrews.

Eventually the famous old town comes into view and we pass through yet another caravan park. Descend to beach level and pass by the harbour area. There are many things to see and do in St Andrews. The cathedral is interesting to look at and entry to the grounds is free. The ancient castle features a bottle dungeon. Entry to the town museum is free but there is a charge for the British golf museum.

Fill up with fish & chips at either Cromars or the Tailend. A good place for a pint is the traditional Whey Pat Tavern just up the road from the bus station. With plenty seating inside, this is one of these boozers that caters for everyone. Service 95 will bring you back to Kingsbarns.
