Culross High Loop (6.5 miles)

Start in the village of Newmills which lies on the B9037. Walk westwards and hang right at the fork in the road which leads uphill. Push on, ignoring a road splitting downhill to the left and continue to the point where an entrance on your left reveals a cottage beyond four stone gateposts. A painted sign says "private" but an official core path leads past the lodge and through a high stretch of woodland. Glimpses of the Forth appear through the trees and the lagoon on the Preston Island promontory is clearly visible.

A gate leads into the grounds of Culross Abbey Mansion and there are several species of mature trees. We are still on core path territory here so you are perfectly within your rights to make your way past the early 17th century property. You will see the Abbey Church tower straight ahead poking above the boundary wall. An opening leads to the graveyard. Have a nose around if you desire. The mansion access road leads out past the gatehouse. Go straight over at the crossroads and leave this minor road when it bends sharply left, taking the grassy path which runs straight ahead. This runs past a ruined church which has some ancient gravestones.

Keep following the footpath, omitting a farm road to the right as you approach the fringes of Devilla Forest. The track skirts the edge of the woodland and a wooden sign hanging on the fence indicates access to a plague grave. Hop over the stile and walk the short distance to the burial site. Three children from the same family were interred here in 1645 after being taken by the disease. Various objects and notes have been placed on the stone and hanging ribbons adorn the surrounding trees.

Return to the main path and swing left at the farm track. Bear right after passing the farm buildings and look out for Blair Castle on your right which functions as a convalescent home for miners. Continue downhill to the shore and cross the main road to join the Fife Coastal Path running alongside the railway. This leads into the centre of Culross. There are several historical sights, including the palace. A few cafes offer refreshment, as does the Red Lion pub. It is a mile and three quarters along the pavement back to Newmills. Alternatively, catch a bus from the centre of the village.
