Summerlee & Canal (2.7 miles)

The Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life is located in the centre of Coatbridge close to both railway stations. It is open seven days a week all year round and admission is free. A large selection of indoor and outdoor exhibits are on display and there is a café on the premises. After exploring the museum, walk down Heritage Way and pick up the green strip on the other side of West Canal Street. This is the bed of the Monkland Canal which once ran all the way to Glasgow but is now largely culverted. Turn right and follow the obvious path, pausing to examine some of the sculpture installations along the old waterway that was closed to navigation in 1952.

After half a mile, the canal emerges and can be followed using the towpath. Cross over at the bridge at Drumpellier Home Farm and make your way back along the opposite bank. The path diverges from the water to join Blair Road. Take a right and return to the point where the canal goes underground and retrace your steps back to the museum.
