West Lothian has many examples of waste tips from the shale oil industry that existed until the post-war period. Most have been repurposed as wildlife havens and a good example is the bing next to the village of Seafield, near Bathgate. A signed circular route leads off the main drag, opposite Deanburn Gardens.
The target is obvious and it's a fairly simple climb, but one with rewarding views across the county. The sawtooth outline of the Five Sisters slag heaps in West Calder can easily be picked out in the middle distance. Make your way down and complete the circuit by emerging at the other end of the small village.
