Plean Country Park (2.5 miles)
Plean is a former mining village on the southern end of the A9. The country park occupies the grounds of a former estate and the layout is shown in this PDF file. The National Coal Board took charge of the area in the 20th century and the land was sold to Stirling Council in 1989, whereupon it was developed into a public amenity. The country park is signposted from the main road through the village and various walking routes are indicated on the map in the car park. The Woodland Trail is the longest at around 2.5 miles. Plot your own course. The location map on this page deliberately shows just the position of the park.
Plean House was built in 1819 but has been a derelict ruin since the early 1970s. The building is fenced off from the public as it is in a dangerous condition. You can also visit the old stables and view the remains of the gamekeeper's cottage. Military buffs should seek out the WW1 practice trenches although you do have to use your imagination as only undulations are left on the present landscape. Whether you enjoy the historical aspects or are simply after a woodland stroll, the park is worth a visit should you happen to be in the area.
