Dalzell Estate (2.5 miles)

On the edge of Motherwell by the River Clyde lies the Dalzell Estate. It formerly contained extensive landscaped gardens and a baronial mansion. After a spell of dereliction, the house was converted into luxury apartments and is category-A listed. The grounds are now a country park in the care of North Lanarkshire Council while the RSPB control the wetlands near the river. More information about the estate and the Baron's Haugh reserve can be found here. A basic map can also be viewed. Parking is available at Baron's Haugh and various trails are shown on an information board. This walk takes in part of the red route.

Follow the path out the far end of the car park. This bends to the left and heads downhill to a T-junction. Turn right on to a gravel surfaced flat trail and check out the bird hide if you wish. A sharp kink to the left bends back towards the river and we are soon walking alongside the Clyde. Another hide is encountered. Upon reaching a metal gate, go left along an avenue known as Chestnut Walk. This runs parallel to the Dalzell Burn and we cross over at a stone bridge. Have a look at the mausoleum, old well and temple. Climb up out of the valley and follow the road to the Japanese Garden (entrance marked by a metal structure). Dalzell House is a little further up the rise and an ancient oak stands near the gates. From the Japanese Garden, pass through a small area of woodland and work your way back to the car park.
