Arbroath to Auchmithie (5.5 miles)
This high-level walk must be one of the best coastal wanders in Scotland. Explore the historic centre of Arbroath - perhaps visiting the abbey - before making your way towards Victoria Park on the eastern side of town. This elevated expanse of green offers amazing views over the North Sea. King's Drive runs below but the birds-eye position is the far superior walking route. Follow the obvious contour of the coastline to the official starting point of the clifftop trail. Those arriving here on wheels can climb up the steps from the car-park, which has toilet facilities.
The well-surfaced trail is unfenced but doesn't stay too close to the precipitous drops. Marvel at the rock formations and little coves you encounter along the way. A staircase leads down to a stretch of beach and you climb back up after 500 yards. This avoids a more complex route through the shaded Seaton Glen. The remainder of the walk is a simple navigation process and eventually we arrive at the former fishing settlement of Auchmithie. A handful of buses per day run back to Arbroath and it's best to schedule your day to align with these services if you don't want the mileage to hit double figures.
