Devilla Well (3.5 miles)
Many walk permutations can be formed within the capacious Devilla Forest. This circular route makes a couple of short deviations from the constructed roads to examine two examples of Devilla's hidden treasures. It's best to keep a copy of the main path network on your phone in case you take a wrong turning at one of the many junctions. Start at the A985 car park and make your way north along the Forestry Commission Road, ignoring the waymarked Red Squirrel Trail to your left. Keep at straight course at the next intersection. Soon afterwards, you may notice a track disappearing into the trees on your left. This is the route to a loch known as Keir Dam and it's 300 yards each way if you fancy a quick detour. Otherwise push on to the next road junction and turn left. Stay on this route, ignoring a trail to the right and skipping over the crossroads. Take the next left.
Look for a gap in the plantation to your left which reveals a walled compound. This clearing was formerly occupied by Keir House and gardens. Return to the main route and just before the next junction, a narrow path leads into the vegetation. Follow the blue ribbons tied to the trees and you will come across the old well. Work back to where you entered the pines and take the road which leads left. This bends sharply and you are now heading back in the direction of the car park. We pass straight over another crossroads. You can follow this route all the way but you can relieve the monotony by branching down a narrower gravel path on your right and hooking up with the squirrel trail to bring you back to the starting point.
