Start at the small car-park for the Loch Leven Heritage Trail, on the right as you enter Kinross on the B996. Go back to the main road and walk towards the High Street, swinging left along Clashburn Road, which routes the bulk of the through traffic away from the town centre. Follow the pavement past Clashburn Close then take the footpath on the right. You are now following the course of the railway line to Perth that closed controversially in 1970. Take a right at the first junction, then a quick left to emerge at a park & ride facility. Follow Junction Road up to Station Road, cross over and join Springfield Road (signed Milnathort) at the roundabout. Drop down into the park and look out for the remains of the station platform as you exit at the other end.
We are now back on the railway trail, paralleling the nearby M90. The walkway terminates at Gallowhill Road and we head downhill back towards the middle of town. Skip over the A922 and bear slightly right into Sunnypark, following the green sign for Loch Leven Trail. A metal gate on the left gives access to a leafy footpath. Ignore a bridge over the burn and stay on the path, turning left at the next junction to skirt the boundary of the golf course. Turn right upon meeting the actual Loch Leven Trail and follow the markers. A nature viewpoint looks out across the loch and we catch sight of the water again at Kirkgate churchyard. Round the bend, we enter a large public area of parkland with Kinross House behind the stone wall. Stick to the water's edge and follow the trail over the boardwalk and past the pier. Hang left at the car-park, cross a bridge and wander past a wooden bird hide, rebuilt in 2022 after the old one was burned down. Turn right at the junction by the railway mural and a short walk brings you back to the start.
