Denny Heritage Circular (3 miles)
The former industrial town of Denny is nestled between two motorways. The Old Parish Church is an impressive landmark in the town centre. Proceed down Glasgow Road and turn left at the Town House. Take the tarred path to the right of the Denny Centre. This popular walkway follows the route of the railway branch to Falkirk and the passenger station (which closed as far back as 1930) was situated around here. After 250 yards, make a 90-degree turn to the left. This path hooks us up with an old freight railway that served the various foundries and mills dotted around the town. Goods traffic continued until the early 70s.
Follow the trail over the River Carron and keep going until the second crossing of the Avon Burn. Pass into the adjacent housing scheme and bear right along Meadow Court before taking a left down Northfield Road. Continue in a straight line for 500 yards until we reach the edge of Herbertshire Castle Park. A gnarled ancient oak stands here and there are information panels about the castle which was gutted by fire back in 1914. Tragically, two teenage girls died in the blaze. Pick up the tarmac route and descend the steps to another crossing of the Carron. The path leads under the M80 and into a pleasant area of old woodland. Upon reaching the road, double back under the motorway and look for a path on the right, opposite the junction with Duke Street. After a short distance, pass through the subway on your left and follow this mineral railway trail all the way back to the starting point.
