Kirriemuir Heritage (2.8 miles)

The Gateway to the Glens Museum in the centre of town tells the story of Kirriemuir and its people. Free entry. Close by is the Peter Pan statue. The creator of the famous childhood character - JM Barrie - was a native of these parts. Head down Bellies Brae and enter the car-park to view the Bon Scott statue. The former AC/DC frontman spent the first few years of his life in Kirriemuir before emigrating to Australia. Cross the Gairie Burn and follow the signed footpath to The Den - a peaceful public park. Stick to the waterside path, which eventually climbs up by an impressive waterfall to reach road level.

Turn right, then right again after 200 yards into Kinnordy Road. Take a left at Lord Lyell Drive and maintain a straight course. A path brings you out on Shielhill Road, opposite the primary school. Walk downhill for 220 yards, turning left on to the narrow Hill Road, signposted for Camera Obscura. Follow this path towards the low summit of Kirriemuir Hill, which features a standing stone and views across Strathmore. The camera obscura is contained within the Barrie Pavilion on the cricket field. The author's grave can be found in the adjacent cemetery. Return to Shielhill Road, which merges with Roods. A straight line takes you back to the city centre. Don't forget to pop into the Star Rock Shop - Scotland's oldest confectioner. You may also wish to visit Barrie's Birthplace (operated by the National Trust) and the Tayside Police Museum.
