Peebles to Innerleithen (7 miles)
Pick up the River Tweed trail in the centre of town. Cross the wide expanse of football and rugby pitches on the north bank and turn right along the pavement beside the A72. Take a left up Hydro Drive and locate the trackbed of the Peebles to Galashiels Railway, closed in 1962. A seven-mile tarmac path has been created upon the course of the line and you cross the Tweed twice en route to Innerleithen.
Navigation is a simple process and the walk sticks faithfully to the route of the railway, with a couple of minor exceptions. The village of Cardrona has been built since the line closed and the signs direct you through the streets. One of the original viaducts over the river was demolished long ago and a modern footbridge has been constructed slightly further upstream. We arrive in the centre of Innerleithen, where ample refreshment provision can be found. A Stagecoach express bus service whisks you back to Peebles.
